Necklace Length Chart: Find Where Your Pendant Will Sit

A necklace length chart helps translate inches and centimetres, but it cannot predict exactly where a chain will fall on every body. Start with a necklace you already like, measure it and account for the pendant drop. Then compare the complete dimensions of the new piece.

Measure a favourite necklace

Open the clasp and lay the necklace straight without stretching it. Measure from one end to the other, including the fastening components as specified by the retailer.

If the necklace has an extender, note both its shortest and longest wearable settings. Check whether the product's advertised length includes that extender.

Test the position before ordering

Use a flexible tape to picture the approximate loop length, then compare it with the neckline you expect to wear. A pendant adds its own drop below the chain, so the overall design can sit lower than the chain alone.

For a gift, discreetly asking the recipient's preferred length can prevent more uncertainty than guessing from height. A necklace she already enjoys is a useful reference.

Think about comfort and movement

A shorter necklace should not feel restrictive. A longer pendant should not repeatedly hit a desk or catch on clothing during your usual activities.

If you plan to layer, check where the pendants sit together. Two different chain lengths can still overlap when their pendants have different dimensions.

A necklace length reference you can personalise

Nominal chain length Approximate centimetres Common styling starting point
14 inches 35.6 cm A close fit on some necks
16 inches 40.6 cm Near the neck base on some wearers
18 inches 45.7 cm A common short pendant starting point
20 inches 50.8 cm A little more depth below the neck
24 inches 61.0 cm A longer line, often over clothing

These are length conversions and approximate styling descriptions, not promises of where a chain will fall. Neck circumference, body proportions, the clasp and pendant drop all affect the result. A close-fitting length should never feel restrictive.

Measure the look you want

Take a necklace you already like, unclasp it and lay it straight without stretching it. Measure from end to end as the seller defines chain length, noting any extender separately. Then put it on with the intended outfit and observe where the pendant ends. This connects the number to a look you can actually judge.

If you do not have a reference necklace, use a soft measuring tape to estimate a comfortable loop, then measure it flat. Add the pendant's drop mentally as a separate visual element. A 45 cm chain with a longer pendant can sit very differently from a plain chain of the same length.

The Ratniva edit

A paisley drop and a leaf drop can sit differently even on chains of similar length. Check the complete chain-and-pendant measurements for your chosen item, and use a necklace you already own as the reference for placement.

Questions, answered

Is an 18-inch necklace the same as 18 centimetres?

No. Eighteen inches equals 45.72 centimetres.

Does a longer chain always look better?

No. Choose the position that suits your clothing and comfort.

Are all extenders included in the listed length?

Retailer descriptions vary. Confirm how the measurement is stated.

Does an extender make every necklace adjustable to any length?

No. It provides only the additional range supplied by that design. Check the base chain length and extender length independently. Do not assume that a photographed necklace has an extender or that a pendant listing includes its chain; those details should be stated for the actual product.
