Gold vermeil and gold-plated jewellery can look alike, but the label alone should not settle your purchase. Compare the base metal, gold fineness, plating thickness and care information. Begin with the base metal
Gold-plated jewellery describes a gold surface layer over another material. The term alone does not tell you whether the underlying piece is sterling silver, brass or something else.
Vermeil refers to a more specifically defined gold-over-sterling-silver construction. As one reference point, US jewellery guidance uses requirements relating to gold quality and coating thickness, including a minimum equivalent thickness of 2.5 microns of fine gold. Those US criteria should not be assumed to describe every listing sold in India.
Ask the retailer for the actual base metal, gold specification and coating thickness. A label is most useful when the product information explains it.
Gold-plated silver is not automatically vermeil
A design can have a genuine 925 silver base and a gold finish without being described as vermeil. Do not promote it to a different category merely because it contains silver underneath.
